Urban Agriculture and Edible Landscapes

February 23rd, 2010

Presented by the U.S. Green Building Council-St. Louis Regional Chapter and the Eastern Missouri Group of the Sierra Club

Urban agriculture presents opportunities to enhance community connectivity, decrease embodied energy in food, contribute to long-term solutions addressing urban decay, and increase the usefulness and interrelation between land and the community. USGBC-STL, in partnership with the Eastern Missouri Group of the Sierra Club, presents a program exploring how to integrate agriculture – passive and active – into our living, work, and educational spaces.   Mary Dewesse, Acorn Landscapes, will discuss opportunities and strategies for incorporating edible landscapes and permaculture principles into commercial development and city planning.  Gwenne Hayes-Stewart, Gateway Greening, will describe how to get community buy-in from grassroots and citizen-managed initiatives, and provide an overview of community gardens, food policy, land use, and the results of the Whitmire Study which examines the relationship between community gardens and their immediate neighborhood.  Dr. Millie Mattfeldt-Beman, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Saint Louis University, will present experiences on campus and in public schools developing gardens and teaching programs to improve nutrition, and discuss SLU’s participation in the Tree Campus USA program with emphasis on edible species.

THIS PROGRAM IS STILL BEING HELD – Hope you can join us!

Join us at Harris-Stowe State University for a presentation on challenges and successes in the design and construction of the HSSU Early Childhood Development/Parent Education Center, currently seeking LEED Gold certification. During the design of the project the Owner had yet to determine if the project should be LEED certified and at what level.  After several meetings to discuss the pros and cons of certification it was determined to pursue a Silver level when the design was nearly 95% complete.  Behind schedule and over-budget according to the Construction Manager’s estimates, the project team faced major challenges. Learn how these challenges were overcome and how the building is now expecting Gold level certification, while being completed on schedule and nearly a million dollars under budget. After the formal presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to take a self-guided tour through the building with designated stops including classrooms, the pervious paved drive, and rain garden.
